Network firewall maintenance on 08/14

K-State Information Technology Services will be replacing the firewall at the campus border in the early morning hours of Monday, August 14.  This will disrupt all campus connections to the internet.  The maintenance window is scheduled for 8/14/2017 from 12:01 a.m. until 6:00 a.m.

Emergency Firewall Maintenance

ITS will be doing some emergency firewall maintenance.  We don't expect any outages from these changes, but if you do see issues sharply increase, notify the IT Help Desk.

Network Maintenance - 08/10/17

K-State Information Technology Services will be replacing the firewall at the campus border in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 10.  This will disrupt all campus connections to the internet and will impact anyone on the campus network attempting to connect to services off campus as well as anyone off campus trying to connect to services hosted here.  The maintenance window is scheduled for 8/10/2017 from 12:01 a.m. until 6:00 a.m.

Network Maintenance - 08/03

This has been completed.

History:
NTS will be performing maintenance on the campus DHCP environment on Thursday August 3th, 2017 from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.  We do not anticipate any impact to user network connectivity during this maintenance.

Network Maintance 8/2 to 8/3

 The portion of the upgrade that was supposed to be completed today is hung due to a few unexpected issues. The maintenance that was scheduled for tomorrow is postponed until these issues can be resolved.

History:
The software on the data center load-balancers is going to be upgraded this week. The passive secondary device will be upgraded on Wednesday August 2nd starting at 10am. On August 3rd EST will failover the pair to the secondary at 8:15am and then upgrade the primary. Services will not experience an outage, however existing connections will not transfer during the forced failover, causing these active connections to be severed momentarily.

KSIS Integrations to/from Other Systems

The KSIS upgrade is complete.

History:
The CASHNet-KSIS integration issue was resolved a few minutes ago. CASHNet implemented a change this morning and payments are once again flowing from CASHNet into KSIS student accounts. KSIS-WebMethods communication issues were resolved yesterday afternoon. The systems are still talking to each other today, which means: All KSIS integrations to/from other systems are working again!

Info Commons and University Computing Labs

 The issue has been resolved.
History:
The Info Commons and some lab computers that use the use Provisioning Services (PVS) are currently experiencing problems with extreme slowness.  ITS is working to resolve the problem.
Areas that may be impacted include the Hale Library Info Commons, Cardwell 144-145 Labs, Seaton 022 UCL, Seaton Library and Cardwell Library. 

Bomgar not available 07/14

The system is available.

History:
The Bongar system is being updated today, July 14.  It will be available after the update is complete.

Network maintenance - Campus Phone Service 07/14

System maintenance is scheduled on July 14 from 12:01am to 6am. This maintenance could potentially affect Manhattan campus phone services initiated to and from off-campus phone numbers. The maintenance could also affect calling between the Manhattan and Salina campuses. All KSU PD emergency voice services (i.e., 911, blue emergency phone calls, and fire/safety alerts) will not be impacted by this maintenance. In addition to phone services, all network connectivity to Executive Court and the Konza Prairie facility could be impacted during the maintenance window.

Email Issues

The email issues have been resolved.

History:

Due to some licensing issues, users may experience some issues with custom settings on mailboxes. Users will still be able to login to Outlook and webmail without issue. However, users may have issues when attempting to setup or change forwarding emails, grant or revoke permissions to calendars and mailboxes, or changing other options for their mailboxes. We are currently working with the vendors to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Beware - Phishing Scams

K-State has surpassed the number of compromised eIDs that occurred in all of 2016. Kansas State will never ask for a password via email. If you receive an email asking for your password, delete it immediately. Check the K-State Phishing Scams Blog to see recent scams.

Ransomware Threats

K-State continues to scan the network for vulnerable devices and actively blocks them.

Precautionary measures to mitigate ransomware threats include:
  • Ensure operating system is up-to-date.
  • Restart computer after updates have been installed.
  • Ensure anti-virus software is up-to-date.
  • Implement a data back-up and recovery plan to maintain copies of sensitive or proprietary data in a separate and secure location. Backup copies of sensitive data should not be readily accessible from local networks.
  • Scrutinize links contained in emails, and do not open attachments included in unsolicited emails.
  • Only download software—especially free software—from sites you know and trust.
  • Enable automated patches for your operating system and Web browser.

We are continuing to monitor our systems for the WannaCry ransomware. A widespread ransomware campaign, referred to as WannaCry, WCry, or Wanna Decryptor, is affecting the global community. While K-State has controls in place at the network border there are areas that make us vulnerable. The Cat Cash online account management software transition is complete and now open for online deposits. Cat Cash customers can being making deposits immediately

Kansas State is upgrading the Cat Cash online account. Since March 30th, customers have been unable to access the ManageMyID online portal for account maintenance. Cat Cash deposits can be made in-person at the following locations:

  • Union Bowling Center | Lower level, K-State Student Union
  • Housing and Dining Services | 104 Pittman

Email Authentication Maintenance - 3/21

This maintenance has been completed.

History:
Information Technology Services updating email authentication system 3/21/17 ITS will start the email authentication maintenance at about 11:59 p.m. During this time, webmail.ksu.edu and email clients — Outlook, MacMail, etc. — may not work. The purpose of this maintenance is to simplify the authentication architecture of Office 365 and improve reliability. We thank you for your patience as we work to improve this critical service.

K-State Online is Unavailable

This issue has been resolved.

History:

K-State Online Canvas recovery continues to progress quickly. Although many users should now be able to access K-State Online, there may still be areas of impaired functionality as they work through remaining issues. We will update this status again when the service is performing as expected

Amazon continues to work on the problem and we do not yet have an ETA on the restoration of K-State online services.

The IT Help Desk has received reports that users are unable to sign into K-State Online.  IT staff are aware of the matter and working on a resolution.

Phishing Scams

Recently we have seen an increase in phishing scams, such as the K-State Alerts phishing scam. Remember - Kansas State will never ask for a password via email. If you receive an email asking for your password, delete it immediately. Check the K-State Phishing Scams Blog to see recent scams.

Trend Micro

This issue has been resolved.

History:
The IT Help desk has received several calls about Trend Micro clients not working properly on Windows computers.  In each case, the Trend Micro a red "No" symbol over it.  The second icon in the Smart Scan Icons section of this Trend Micro article matches the icon: http://docs.trendmicro.com/all/ent/officescan/v10.6/en-us/osce_10.6_olhsrv/ohelp/clients/clicons.htm.   This indicates that Real-Time Scan is disabled, but the KSU client does not seem to have an option to enable the scan anywhere in the console or in the icon right-click menu.

All the problem clients found so far are connected to the KSU-OS04.ads.ksu.edu server, and they have the 11.0.1050 Service Pack 1 update installed.

History:
'Trend Micro has been made aware of the potential false URL blocking. Some users may have experienced pop-up messages blocking a URL or malicious file. Trend is working on a resolution and we will send an update when more information is available.

Please keep alert for phishing scams. Recently there has been a phishing scam sent to people at the university asking for them to open an attachment from President Richard B. Myers. DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT. This email is fraudulent and the attachment is malicious. See https://blogs.k-state.edu/scams/ for information about the scam as well as other scams that have been sent in to the university. Please contact the IT Help Desk if you clicked on the attachment or responded to the email.

Network Maintenance - 1/11/17

This maintenance has been completed. 

History:
NTS will be performing maintenance on the wireless service starting at 10:00 p.m. through 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday (1/11). This campus wide maintenance will affect the “KSU Wireless” SSID/Network. Once this maintenance is completed, users could be prompted to accept a new SSL certificate. This certificate acceptance is required before the user's credentials can be passed to the new server for authentication.
