Catfiles/NFS Performance Issues

Users are reporting slowness when using Catfiles/NFS. Additional storage has been added to Catfiles/NFS. While data is being distributed across this new node users may notice a little slowness in Catfiles/NFS response. Hopefully this will only be for a short duration. Once the new node has been populated we should notice an increase in response of Catfiles/NFS.

Once the maintenance has been completed, we will be starting a pilot program for a new wireless authentication service. This will affect connectivity to KSU Wireless and KSU Housing, in the Library. User experiences can vary depending on individual device configurations. For most users, the first time they try to connect to KSU Wireless and KSU Housing , they will be prompted to accept a new SSL certificate. This acceptance is required before the user's credentials can be passed to the new server for authentication. Planned Maintenance: Old LDAP Infrastruxure Decommissioning - Wednesday 9/21
This maintenance has been completed.
History:
The Office of Mediated Education (OME)has worked the last several months to fully migrate to the new LDAP infrastructure. On 9/21/2016 11am CST the old LDAP infrastructure will be de-commissioned. If there are issues this action is easily reversed to restore service. That being said, OME does not anticipate issues because the access logs have been monitored for the last month and has migrated the systems that were still hitting the old LDAP to the new infrastructure.

Webmail Sign-In Error on Chrome
K-State webmail is currently encountering sign-in errors due to updates to sign-in systems. This problem occurs primarily on Google Chrome and affects all operating systems. ITS staff are aware of the issue and are applying changes as necessary to resolve the problem.

ITS is updating the Trend Micro servers on Tuesday, Sept 6th after business hours. Throughout the week updates will be rolled out to users who have Trend Micro installed on their computers. Once the updates are completed a restart of the computer will be required for the updates to go through. These updates are to support Windows 10 Anniversary edition.

Isilon Boot Drive Replacement Maintenance - Wed 8/31

EMC will be here tomorrow at 3 pm (8/31/16) to replace a failed boot drive in node1 of the Isilon cluster. Connections on node one will be moved to other nodes during this maintenance since the node will have to be powered off to replace the internal boot drive.

Phishing scam - Meeting Notification hitting user's email accounts this morning. Clicking on the URL and going to the website will allow the site to download malware to your computer. URL is blocked on the K-State Network and by Trend Micro Antivirus. If you accessed the website please run a malware scan on your computer to remove anything harmful that may have been installed.

ITS has seen an increased number of phishing scams being reported by users. Phishing scams are emails that ask for users to "Verify your email now" or "Click here to reactivate your password".
Kansas State University will never ask you for your password in an email or a survey. If you receive an email asking to verify your account, reactivate your password, or anything else that looks suspicious please forward the email to abuse@ksu.edu. If you have questions, please call the IT Help Desk at 785-532-7722.

Phone cable replacement project: August 11th - 14th

Networking and Telecommunications Services needs to replace cable that was damaged last year when the steam tunnels were flooded. While a fix has been in place, the work occurring next weekend will permanently repair the cable. Repairs will occur outside of normal working hours and will only affect telephone lines and not data connections.
Work begins on Thursday, August 11 at 5 p.m. The first building to be repaired will be Anderson Hall. Service work will be completed during the evening and telephones in Anderson Hall will be back in operation by 8 a.m. Friday morning. Phone cable replacement will continue after 5 p.m. on Friday, August 12 and run through the weekend.
All phones should be operational by 8 a.m. Monday morning, August 15. If users experience any outages after these repairs, please call the repair line at 532-7111. Updates will be posted on the www.ksu.edu/its/status page.

KSIS Migration to Converged Infrastructure 7/29-7/31
Information Technology Services successfully migrated KSIS to the new converged infrastructure: a combination of servers, storage, networking, virtualization and management.

During this time approximately half the lab will be unusable while equipment is replaced while the other half will remain open for use. Those needing a quieter place to work during these upgrades are encouraged to use Hale Library or Seaton 022.

Voicemail Issues
Issues regarding the management of voicemail profiles has been resolved. Users are now able to change voicemail passwords, and features such as managing greetings.

Microsoft has resolved this issue.

Users are reporting being unable to send email via SMTP settings. Microsoft is currently experiencing an issue nationwide with Exchange Online Services and email messages could be delayed. Microsoft is currently working on a deployment of an incremental fix.

Application Outage
DARS is back on line. This issue has been resolved.

Resource25 and Salina General Ledger applications were back online by midday Monday, July 11. The outage was due to disk drive failures. ITS worked through the weekend to troubleshoot and restore these systems.
An announcement in Monday morning’s K-State Today reported that DARS is scheduled for an upgrade and would be unavailable July 18 and 19. Because DARS was one of the applications that was offline last week, ITS decided to move forward with the upgrade and move to the converged infrastructure. DARS will continue to be offline. Our goal is to restore DARS to full service by July 13.
ITS staff appreciates the patience of campus while we worked with our vendor partners to troubleshoot and restore these important systems.

Webmail Missing Folders
Users are unable to view the full list of folders in Webmail for mailboxes that have over 1,000 folders. In this scenario, only the first 1,000 folders in alphabetical order will be displayed. As a work around users can use the Outlook desktop client to view all folders. Microsoft engineers are working on a solution.

The Financial Information System (FIS) will be migrating to the converged infrastructure this weekend. FIS will be taken down at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15th; the migration will start shortly after and should be complete by approximately 5:00 pm Sunday, April 17th. Canvas Issue
History:
Canvas is currently experiencing problems related to Explorer 11 and Edge browsers on Windows 10. Some students have reported problems submitting assignments when using these browsers. The "SmartScreen Filter" security feature in IE 11 and Edge is flagging Canvas (specifically, components of Canvas to do with assignment submissions) as potentially dangerous.
Canvas engineers are working to fix this problem, but in the meantime we suggest that students switch to another browser like Chrome 47 and 48, Safari 8 and 9, or Firefox 43 and 44.
For students who wish to use IE 11 or Edge, they can turn off the "SmartScreen Filter" by following these steps:
1. Go to "Settings" in IE 11 or Edge
2. Choose "Advanced Settings"
3. Turn off the option labeled "Help protect me from malicious sites and downloads with SmartScreen Filter"

Infocommons/UCL network maintenance - Thurs 3/17
This maintenance has been completed.
History:
There were issues with the migration to the BlueCat DHCP server. Any computers booted are still working. ITS Staff are working to resolve the issue for non-booting computers.
Beginning at 8:30am this morning ITS will be transitioning the Hale Library Infocommons and University Computing Labs to the BlueCat DHCP server. Any computers booted during this time will be unaffected until reboot. Issues are not expected with this maintenance, but there is a possibility of a configuration issue that will require a bit more time to resolve.

The IT Help Desk has received a number of calls about the wireless connection not working in Dole Hall and Chalmers Hall. ITS Network staff are aware of the problem and working on a resolution. They hope to have service restored in the next 30 minutes.

K-State Online Classic access issue
Access issues have been resolved and K-State Online Classic is available.

OISC will be removing a firewall on Thursday, January 14th at 1:30pm. There will be a brief service disruption of all Housing wired and wireless networks during the switch, but it should only last a few seconds.

All computing labs will be unavailable on Monday morning due to the Isilon maintenance. During this time ITS Staff will also be upgrading the version of the license server for Citrix. All services are expected to be back online by 7:30am although lab computers may require a reboot. ITS Staff will be checking on and rebooting computers as necessary.
